  4.     DIED. Robert Penn Warren, 84, the only American writer to
  5. win Pulitzer Prizes for both fiction and poetry and the first
  6. U.S. poet laureate; in Stratton, Vt. Warren's writings were
  7. deeply rooted in his native South. His 1946 novel All the King's
  8. Men, based on Louisiana's legendary populist Governor Huey Long,
  9. became an Academy Award-winning film. Warren was one of the
  10. first to win a MacArthur Foundation "genius grant." In 1980 he
  11. was given the Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian
  12. award.
